Reading Practice Exercise 6 (Medium Text)

Read the text below and then answer the questions:

The election is looming and there are four new candidates. The first is Steven Johnson from the REP party, the second is Silvia Goncalves from the Dem party, the third is Tripti Patel from the EC party and last, but not list is Bill Johnson from the FREE party.

Each of the candidates have given their views on how they can run as governor for New Park City in Nowhere Country and what they believe in.

A) At the REP party we believe in making the rich keep their money. We think if you worked hard for your money you should be able to pay lower taxes. The poor should pay more taxes. We do not believe in anything environmentally friendly and we promise the following if we are elected. We promise to build less parks and more skyscrapers for billionaires to live in. We will invest in business owners and build more shops, shopping malls and reduce any parks or social facilities like youth clubs. Charities will also be closed down, as we want to make way for more profiteering and greedy companies. The rich should stay rich and work hard for their money. The poor should bore the responsibility for taxes and no rich person should ever have to pay any taxes. We have a zero tolerance policy against immigrants and don’t believe immigrants should come here unless they are wanted or invited to fill skilled jobs. We will stop all spouse visas or family visas and build a big wall along the border. This is our priority.

B) We believe at the Dem party that anyone should be able to come here freely, so we will reduce any borders and make a visa-free policy for every country around the world. We will focus on less skyscrapers and invest more in youth centres, more charities and preserve the local land to make sure we have green parks everywhere all over the city. We will create jobs on the outskirts by building a new casino and shopping mall. We will make the city car-free and implement the use of electronic scooters and bike lanes. Only car sharing services will be able to enter the city and authorised taxis. Local buses will be allowed and there will be a massive investment into a metro system to be completed in 3 years.

C) We believe at the EC party that immigration should be controlled. We will control the border, but people who want to come here skilled or unskilled should be allowed to come here. We will offer medical care for people who are on a low income and increase the tax rate for the rich by 80 percent. Rich people are too rich and should pay more taxes, but the poor should only pay 5 percent tax. We will reduce VAT and make our salaries tax free for people coming to work here, so they can contribute to the workforce. We oppose gambling and the new shopping mall. We do not want a metro system, as the bus service is enough, so we will not allow the city to build a new metro system. We will limit the number of cars coming through with a congestion charge. We will offer FREE travel for the elderly.

D) At the FREE party we think everything should be free. Free healthcare, free travel, free education and a tax free income. We will abolish all taxes, build a new casino, ten new shopping malls, invest in housing, new penthouses, redesign the harbour and marina area. We will work with foreign investors to offer tax free properties and visas for foreign buyers. We will also build a massive metro system, so you can travel all over the country and a new tram overground rail system. We will make all the buses green and use an emission free model. Only hybrid cars can enter the city and taxis will be abolished to the outskirts. We will offer a free shuttle service using the buses for car users who can park outside the city. All bicycles are allowed in the city and we do not want any scooters. We will make Friday a car free zone in the city to reduce pollution. We will also build more hotels to invest in tourism for the city with $1.2 billion USD to invest into tourism and improve our economy. This will create lots of jobs in the city. We will reduce the current unemployment rate of 70 percent to 10 percent or less. University students will be offered free courses for life.
